With the Conference ‘Poverty Is Not a Game’ the Network of European Foundations, the King Baudouin Foundation and IBBT, with the support of Flemish and Walloon public authorities, wishes to contribute to the societal debate on the use of computer games in educational settings in Europe within the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

High on the conference agenda is to look at and respond to the challenges and opportunities that gaming represents and raising awareness by debating the usefulness and the extent of games being used in education to discuss complex societal issues. Keynote speakers Jane McGonical, from the Institute for the Future, California with the support of Flanders DC and Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen, CEO, Serious Games Interactive (winner of BETT 2010) will show how, among other things, gaming can develop problem-solving abilities, tap into creativity, teach players how to make decisions and improve their command of languages. Such specific and positive effects are, however, rarely promoted.

This fits with the growing attention paid to the phenomenon of ‘gaming’ in society and with the context of the Digital Agenda for Europe. The PING (Poverty Is Not a Game) game will be launched during the conference as an innovative and positive example of using computer games in school.

Target group

PING is an event for targeted stakeholders representing the 27 EU countries covering the public (educational field), NGO, private and academic sectors, technologists and delivery partners from across Europe
