The VIII MAGIS Spring School, organized by the University of Udine and the University of Paris III in collaboration with their network of partners - the Universities of Amsterdam, Bochum, Prague, Valencia, Milano-Cattolica, Pisa and CineGraph/Hamburg - as part of the activities of the International PhD in Audiovisual Studies, will be held this year in Gorizia, from March 19th to March 25th.
This VIII edition of the MAGIS Spring School, in continuity with past editions, since 2006 dedicated to the relationship and interaction between cinema and other contemporary art forms, aims to further expand last year’s topic - audiovisual and multimedia performance and live cinematic experiences - by opening new perspectives of study and analysis: it will be focused on the relationship between audiovisual forms, traditionally defined as time-based arts, and architectural, public and urban space.
With the help of scholars, graduate students, artists, curators and representatives of art institutions, the VIII Spring School will try to answer to the following questions:
What is the relationship between time and space in multi-screen / multi-channel audiovisual performances? What are the aesthetical possibilities and theoretical implications of using architecture and urban landscape as a fundamental part of live cinematic experiences? How the proliferation of audiovisual and new cinematic practices on architectural and urban scale redefines our experience, perception and collective consciousness? How these processes alter spectator’s role? What is the role of sound in all that?
Applicants are invited to submit abstracts addressing the school’s topics, by investigating the following themes:
- Analysis and theories of spatial practices in audiovisual live pieces and installations
- Seminal audiovisual performances and spatial dispositifs (apparatus)
- Spatiality vs temporality: is multimedia performance just a time-based art form?
- Architecture and public space as a platform for live cinematic experiences (media/dynamic facade, expanded screens, environmental interaction, context display etc.)
- Real space vs virtual or augmented space in audiovisual experience
This edition of the MAGIS Spring School will further expand its fields of study with five sections, some of which completely new, as other areas of inquiry and research: Cinema/Comics/Animation, Filming the Game/Playing the Film, Porn Studies, Film Heritage.
